My second year as a published author

This is been a wonderful year! Not only did I become a writer and get to fulfill my dreams, but I also became published. I have been one busy girl. I wrote 4 books this year, keeping myself glued to this computer. I wrote; The Many Lives of Avery Snow, Ianni, The Brown House and The Unraveling of Avery Snow.

It's been a hectic year to say the least, but I have been happy to be on this roller coaster ride.

Here are a few highlights of my year.

I went to Forks, WA with my two best friends Angie and Kate.
And Climbed my first mountain to see a
waterfall.

I did a book signing in Collingswood, NJ

I went to South Carolina for Y'all Fest!!

My books got into Barnes and Noble!!
And I did a book signing!!!! It was so fun.

I met Anchor Group Team Members

While in Forks, a tree almost ate me

And I caught my first Bass in Maine. It didn't try to eat me :)

The biggest thing I did this year?? I found

myself. I found out who I am and what road I want to travel down in this life.
I know who are my real friends and who are not. I know who loves me and who pretends to. I know who supports me in this journey and I thank them! I will not stop writing and I hope to make my books bigger and better and hit the big time! I will do it for myself and for my kids. But in honesty, in their eyes they think I am the 'big-time' and that's what matters most.

My story as an author

This is something I hardly ever speak of. But I thought it was time to let everyone know the dangers of being scammed as an author. It's something no one ever thinks of, ever! I certainly didn't have any clue it would happen to me. Here is my story:
I had originally set out to self publish my first book, The Many Lives of Avery Snow. I had gotten my Nook and thought, 'It's time that I do this'. I had been sitting on the idea of Avery for years and getting that Nook gave me the push I needed. I mean honestly, why not? If I can self publish my own book, why not do it?
So I finished her story and I sat back and thought 'what now?' The  very first thing I did was start a blog. Then I started a Facebook page for my book. I had never intended on making money on my book, I just wanted to publish my story. Within two days of posting my information on FB two publishers contacted me. One asked for my submission and the other pretty much gave me a contract over the phone. My first mistake, I never did my homework on either publisher.
I went with the second publisher, they are no longer in business, but we will call them MP. MP promised me everything. A contract that in my eyes looked legit. I had a book cover, an editor, and was told I would be released to publish that January. I was over joyed, until they told me I had to pay for my publishing costs. In which I questioned. But their answers seemed understandable right? No! Second mistake, if you are truly published you DONT pay for your publishing!!!! What an idiot I was right?
So I paid, a lot of money btw. Anyway, I was published and promised royalties. I was also promised my own copies of my books for book signings. I told everyone they could get their copy. Heck I hadn't even seen my book yet, or held it in my hands. On the day the books were set to arrive, they didn't. I had paid for these books and not received them. Needless to say I was loosing my patience. I started to inform myself, something I should have done a lot sooner.
But MP was VERY persuasive. They made me feel like they cared about me and my career. They were good talkers. But then weird stuff would happen. Like disconnected phone numbers, other authors warning be to stay clear of them. But I stayed with them. I was loyal wasn't I?
Then the mother of all rocks came tumbling down upon me. MP decided that they didn't want to publish books any longer and they were selling their business. Holy OMG are you kidding me?
No I am not kidding, they were serious. They left me hanging and didn't care what happened to me.
Luckily I was in the same boat with author Stacey Rourke. She was one of their victims, along with Katherine Polillo. Stacey took the reigns and started a traditional publishing group, Anchor Group Publishing. I was so glad to jump aboard her ship! She runs a fantastic publishing company that is nearing their Sophomore year. We do not pay for our publishing!! And we get our royalties. BTW I never saw any of MP royalties from my book. They stole them all. I assume this because I have never seen a check. Even though they promised they would send it to me.
Here is the lesson here. Do not get so excited that you lose your head! Do your research! These predators are still out there and they will talk you dizzy.
I am happy to say that my books are doing quite well without the old publisher. I know that Anchor Group has my best interest at heart and I see hope on the horizon with my books.

One awesome thing

I love when I haven't seen someone in years and they find out I am a writer now. It's a feeling I cannot explain. It makes me proud that I accomplished something awesome. Something that I dreamt of as a little girl!!
I recently heard from someone who used to know me as a little girl. She was shocked to find out I write. Now she wants to read my work. I mean, WOW.
I can't believe it sometimes. But, I have such a different outlook on it all. I want more. I want to go further than I am now. I want to write more and write my best.
Telling someone I am a writer is awesome, no doubt. But I want to shout it out to the world. I want everyone to know. Because I am super proud of my work. Every writer should be.

1.What is the working title of your book?

The Unraveling of Avery Snow Book 2 of The Past Lives Series

3.What genre does your book fall under?

Paranormal Romance

4.Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

I would like to see Amanda Seyfried play Avery Snow. I totally see Sean Faris as Dallas and Alex Pettyfer as Landon. I have thought about this alot.

5.What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? "Even the strongest love can unravel"

6.Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I am published by Anchor Group publishing.

7. How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

8.What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Kissed by an Angel by Elizabeth Chandler and Passion by Lauren Kate

If you like a good heart-wrenching love story, look no further. Alot of readers say that this is the first book they have read since Twilight where they fall in love with the characters.

HALLOWEEN FAN ART!

The Brown House reviews

"The Brown House is so much more than a ghost story; it combines an endearing romance, a young woman's coming of age and marvels at the wonders of family and friendship. Christy Sloat's writing style is simplistically beautiful. It manages to capture the protagonist's inner turmoil and personality as she (Brylee) ventures through a journey of self-discovery and mystery. There is a powerful atmospheric charge throughout the entire novel that effectively keeps the reader gripped and wanting Brylee to succeed in her many endeavours. The narrative is superbly paced with the build-up tension successfully created, so much so, no doubt the reader will be listening out to creaks in their house and searching for a blanket to read under. The mysterious events and blossoming relationships evident in the book all come together satisfactorily, with a few significant twists along the way that will keep the reader second guessing. What was particularly successfully created was the ending. Christy Sloat certainly knows how to keep her readers on the edge of their seats and desperately waiting for more. An engaging and thoroughly entertaining read." Thanks to Bex and Books "I received this e-book from the author Christy Sloat as part of Author Indie Month which I was approached about by JoAnne MacLeary. JoAnne's idea was to promote more indie authors and their book in the month of October. I decided to take it a step further and give the whole month of October to Indie authors who self publish or use small publishers. So the cover of this book, to me immediately suggest something dark and perhaps dangerous is in that house. The cover gives the house a spooky look. (Another reason this is perfect for October, you could make it your Halloween Read!) I want to readily admit that I approached this book thinking I may not like it as I don't usually read ghostly types of books, they just aren't my thing. However I had promised I would read this one so I cosied down and began reading. By 12% into the book I was seriously hooked. I loved the flow of the book, how it was written really suited me. We are learning everything that happens from Brylee's point of view. I instantly liked, then went on to love, Brylee, Lynley and of course who wouldn't fall in love with the gorgeous yet gentlemanly Ephraim. The descriptions are brilliant. When Brylee becomes aware of the ghost she fill a chill in the air, and believe me when you really get into this book you kinda feel the chill with her. Another character I like is Kayla, though I did guess her "secret" quite early on, though that didn't spoil the plot in any way at all. I am purposely not revealing too much about the book s I would love for you all to read it for yourselves and enjoy it as I did. The book has ghosts, mysteries to solve, curses to try and work out as well as all the normal teenage angst of picking the right dress for the fall dance and getting your friend a date with they guy she has been crushing on for years. The book really builds up to a fantastic cliff hanger that seriously makes me want book 2 now! So did I enjoy the book? Surprisingly I loved it! Would I recommend it? Definitely to those who love ghostly tales and those like myself who are not so keen on them, this book will change your opinion! Would I read more by Christy Sloat? I plan to, I love her style of writing, the descriptions and how easy you flow through the book. Would I want to read bk 2 in The Visitor's Series? Oh yes please, please I would love to." sanz

The Unraveling...

I am currently working on my next book in the Past Lives Series, The Unraveling of Avery Snow. It is always fun to revisit my old pals from this book. But with the first book on the shelves there is always pressure to make it better than the first. Some trilogy's or Series' tend to go on and on and never end. I fully intend for this book to be better than the last. I have grown as a writer. I have learned what I should have added and what I should have taken out. But with that said, this is my book and my writing style. Not everyone will agree or like it. That is fine. I say, Hey like me or not, I wll not go anywhere. :)

Freebie Friday

Jump aboard Anchor Group Publishing's Friday Freebie. Check out Amy Richie's book Willow. It is a fabulous read for Freebie Friday. Freebie Friday's are sponsored by Anchor Group. And remember, while you're downloading, click the:
Each like, tag, or review helps the author out. Your small chance to pay it forward. Happy reading!
“Being a werewolf is harder than it looks. Everyone thinks it’s just morph at the full moon, kill, morph back. That’s not true. It’s a lot harder than that. Especially if you are seventeen years old.”

Willow has the worst luck. First she has to deal with her narcissistic foster mother, Bella; then of course there’s her horrid little sister Ivy; not to mention the pack of werewolves that belong to Bella. Now, they have to move and start a new school - again.

Just when Willow thinks things can’t get any worse, Blake shows up from a council she never knew existed to name her leader of a pack she never knew existed. How was she supposed to teach a bunch of teenagers how to be wolves when she herself hated everything about her life?

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic story! August 25, 2012
Willow is a great read. It's not at all your basic werewolf story. It has action, drama, love, and humor. It is very well written. I love this author, I will continue to read her books. Hopefully there will be many many more to come! Read this book and just try not to love it :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic read August 30, 2012
Willow is an amazing character with depth and personality that draws you in immediately, I couldn't put it down! Amy is a great descriptive writer with a story that doesn't fall in step with other books of this very popular genre and the lives of these werewolves is so fresh and different that it has a real sense of reality mixed with fantasy! I can't wait to read the next book in the series as well as any other novel Amy writes.

5.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING! (Waiting for book 2) August 30, 2012
By Amanda
'WOW' was my first thought once I finished Willow. I was already thinking "When does book 2 come out?" Amy's world of werewolves had me hooked from the start. Willow was a great lead character and I enjoyed following her and watching as she grew. After the first chapter I had abandoned everything for the day just to read one more chapter....and then one more....until I had finished the entire thing in one sitting!! Without giving away too much I loved the role her females play - what woman wouldn't want several men to obey their every whim? The story line was great and easy to follow with enough to leave you asking questions...and of course salivating for more! Five stars? Pshh I say TEN!

A good book needs attention

http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/412328847
When a good book like this is out there I want to bring attention to it!
This book is how Erotic Romance should be written. It didn't drag on and on, it was seductive, edgy and sensual. A great read for couples in my opinion!
I love Elise Marion's writing and hope to read more from her in the very near future.
Check out her books and get hooked like I did.

Tangled thoughts in one whole day

So for today I leave a post of all the thoughts that go through my crazy mind. I woke up with an inner peace about my job as an author. I even saw my Barnes and Noble book signing event on a flyer, which was pretty amazing.
Then in the afternoon the sense of dread filled me due to the nerves that overcome my excitement about the signing. What will I wear? What will I say? To be honest I am not a huge talker. Especially about my books. I get silly and embarrased. Yes I know it's something to be proud of, but come on, last year this wasnt my life and this year, BAM WAMO I am an author. Hey I guess I could talk abotu that?
By the evening and my last cup of coffee for the day I dread my daughter starting second grade. I hope I can manage writing and school work at the same time! I am also working on my next book! So super busy is how I feel right now.
So that's it! My tangled thoughts. Hopefully I can get this all figured out. I do think a good night's rest will do me some good.

CONTEST!!!

One of the hardest things about being a writer is coming up with book titles. Coming up with The Brown House was super easy, because it was based on the real place. But for book two things are a bit more complicated. So the contest is up for you to help me chose the name for book two in the Visitor's Series.
This is what I need for the title:
Something easy and catchy.
Not too long. Maybe only a few words.
Try to stay on track of the storyline. (you might have to read the book for this)
I would like it to be original of course.
Also I would like it to tie in with the first book's title.
To give you a little clue about book 2, we will need to find out what other secrets the house holds and what will happen with Ephraim and Lynley. We also need to address Kayla as well. :)

THE WINNER WILL WIN A SIGNED COPY OF THE BOOK ONCE IT IS RELEASE NEXT SUMMER. ALSO YOU WILL BE IN THE ACKNOWLEDGMENTS PAGE.

You have until October to come up with the title. To enter leave a comment below with your name and your title. That's all!
The winner will be announced in October (Date pending)

It's darn hard to be a writer

I think the hardest part of being a writer is not the creation, writing, editing or anything like that. It's the struggle to get fans to read your book. Sure I have fans on FB, Twitter and Goodreads. I love them all. They make me laugh and smile on my hardest days. But actually hearing from them, the feedback of the book, is the BEST. When I hear, "Oh I loved your book." I get chills. Of course I get bad reviews too. Once I wipe the tears of defeat from my eyes, I move on. But getting people to spread the word is tough. I am known on FB, but am I known elsewhere??
Honestly I am just one of the many Indie authors out there. There are so many of us struggling to be "known" and to sell books. I don't want fame, I want to sell stories. To transport people to another world is my goal. I want to be able to help you escape the daily life you lead and throw you into my story world. God knows that's why I read. Help the Indie authors out and buy our books. Yes of course the huge published books are so awesome, but so are ours!!!
Okay with that said I am back to writing now :) xoxoxox

The Brown House is unleashed.

So when I started writing TBH in January I had no idea how awesome the book would turn out. I am super proud of this book. I feel instantly in love with all of my characters. Almost more than my Avery Snow characters, almost. Avery Snow is my first book and I will always love it, but I love love love TBH.
Now it's out in Kindle and I am so pumped to be hearing the reviews and that people are enjoying it!!!
All of the buy links for both my books are on this blog :)

The Brown House

So I finished my next book, The Brown House. This book is not related the The Past Lives Trilogy. This is a new series I started in January. It's funny how books just come to you and you MUST get them down on paper. Anyways on Friday the 13th I finished it. YAY Pre-edting was completed last night and I sent it to my awesome editor Melissa Ringsted, last night! So I hope it will be good to go soon.
I cant wait to share my cover for this book with you! It's going to be fantastical! Now that I am done with that book I am on to a short story for my publisher's to put in an Anthology this year. There will be no rest. But that is ok. I live off of busy busy busy!

The Brown House

My second book is finished. Phew! This one is very different from TMLOAS. It's more of a lets say, dark book. Although it is based on a haunted house my husband grew up in, there is a romance feel. I hope it will thrill you in some areas and make you swoon for Ephraim in others. Stay tuned for The Brown House in July 2012

A review of "A Hazy Shade of Winter" By Jessica Bradshaw

The writing was brilliant in this novel about a guardian angel and the young woman he is guarding, Jude. At first I didnt know what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprisied to recieve chills from the first few pages. Bradshaw has many of the same views as I do about our world, Angels, Demons and the afterlife. So I fell for this book instantly. There was NOTHING that I would change about this book. The writing was perfection. I am very excited to read more in this series. I deeply fell in love with Jude! She is a girl to whom many teens can relate. Being an adult I can also relate to her through my teen years. Samuel is a tortured soul, that is for sure. I hope to see more of their romance in book 2.
Go out and get your copy today!!! I am serious!!

REVIEW OF 'EMBRACE' By Stacey Rourke

Stacey Rourke's debut novel 'The Conduit' is undoubtedly one of my favorite so far this year. So when she asked me to review the second book in The Gryphon Series, I of course jumped at the chance. To read a book before release, uh heck yes! So here is goes:
As if I hadn't already fallen in love with Celeste and her siblings in the first book, I am totally smitten now. They are just the funniest bunch of fictional character's I have ever read. Celeste with her witty one liners, Gabe and his ferocious hotness, and of course the ever lovely Kendall. I dove into this book headfirst and was pleasantly surprised with the impeccable writing of Stacey Rourke. She has pulled me into this world where these three exist and I don't want to leave.
In this version Celeste starts the whole dating scene. Oh my do I adore her suitor. The ever so handsome Irish gentleman, Caleb. I found myself drooling onto my Nook over Caleb. However, this book isn't all about sappy romance and hilariously funny banter, the action in this book is undeniable. Celeste is now being attacked by more evil forces who this time want to take over everyone she cares about.
I am officially loving this series! I love Rourke's writing, she is definitely a rare writing gem.

To hold a book in your hands

Now I wrote a book, and I saw it published on Kindle. What an amazing feeling I have to say. But there is just something about holding the paperback in your hands. It's so real to me now that I wrote a book. Before, it wasn't as if it wasn't real, but not so satisfying. This is a great feeling. Even if I don't make tons of money off of this project, which I don't think I will, the feeling of holding my book is like a dream come true. Avery Snow is my first book, and she is my baby right now. There will be other books, but I will not forget what it feels like to hold your own book.

There comes a time when....

You are writing a book and you sit back and say, "Wow. I am totally stuck." That is me right now with The Brown House. I am hoping that fighting this sickness with help clear things up. Big things are coming around the corner, with Avery Snow. The book should be released in paperback so soon. Can you feel it in the air? Well I can. Thanks for being here!!

TO BECOME A CHARACTER IN THE PAST LIVES TRILOGY BOOK 2

How cool would it be to become a character in a book? I mean a real solid character based on you! Well that is something I want to do for my fans. One lucky fan will become a character in The Past Lives Trilogy book two. Due out next year.
So how do you do this you ask? Well its simple really, you purchase my book. E-book or print it doesnt matter. Once you have purchased it, take a picture of you with your copy. Post it to my facebook wall
https://www.facebook.com/pastlivestrilogy. Oh thats not all I need you to do..I also need you to post a review to the site where you purchased it {Amazon, Nook, Smashwords, Ect.} I also need you to post a review on Goodreads http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/13412018-the-many-lives-of-avery-snow.
I want a few more things. I know I know, I am making this tough right? I need you to follow my blog. Yep follow and comment below that you did all of the above. Give me links for proof. So that I can stalk your posts and your reviews.
Once you have done all this why dont you refer your friends to my author page as well https://www.facebook.com/pages/Christy-Sloat-Author/159512457482058, tell them to say "Hi" and who sent them, and of course fill them in on this awesome oppurtunity!
Now thats not very hard is it? Right now my lovely book is going through some make-overs. Oh yes books need make-overs :) This means its not for sale right now. But if you purchased it before this re-do you can start your task's above. If you didnt purchase you may have to wait a while. I will let you know right away when the book will be back up.
Trust me I dont like it down either!! Boo Hoo..
But once you all do the task's for this one of a kind contest I will ask our trusty friend random.org to select the winner. If you get picked I will need to ask you some questions all about YOU. I will fill you in on your character and you can tell all your friends, "Hey thats me!" when they read my book.
Cant wait to see who gets it :)
